Magdelēnas kvartāls ranked among the best urban regeneration projects in the Baltics in 2019

At the Baltic Real Estate Awards 2020, Magdelēnas kvartāls, a new kind of living and working space developed by Vastint Latvia in Riga, was recognised as one of the best urban regeneration projects to have been realised in the Baltics in 2019.

This year at the Baltic Real Estate Awards, winners were chosen in five categories: Best Office and Business Development, Best Residential Development, Best Shopping Centre, Best Hotel and Best Urban Regeneration Project. The developers of the project received their award at the Baltic Real Estate Investment Forum 2020, which took place in Vilnius in September this year. In total, five projects from Latvia, including Magdelēnas kvartāls, were listed among the finalists this year.

This is the first year that a Baltic Real Estate Award was given in the category Best Urban Regeneration Project. Magdelēnas kvartāls was nominated alongside four other projects: Live Square multi-functional quarter and the S7 office complex in Vilnius (Lithuania), and the Rottermanni and Noblessner quarters in Tallinn (Estonia).

Magdelēnas kvartāls is located in Riga’s Quiet Centre, between Antonijas Street, Melngaiļa Street and Strēlnieku Street. From the very start of the planning process, the quarter was developed as a unified, harmonious whole with extensive functional options for living, work and relaxation. During the first phases of the project, two residential buildings with 116 apartments have been constructed at Magdelēnas kvartāls; these include seven Live-Work units, which are unique on the market, three commercial spaces, parking spaces and garages, as well as a 2,000 m² verdant garden. After a number of further phases of development are complete, the quarter will boast 300 apartments, 16,500 m² of office space and 4,500 m² of commercial space in total.

Gatis Didrihsons, lead architect at Didrihsons Arhitekti: “When we planned the construction of the residential buildings, we set as our main aim to create green, safe, urban and well-kept surroundings. The quarter is not closed off, but has been created as an open, inviting passage, where everyone will receive a friendly welcome. The architecture is classic and elegantly reserved, with modern proportions and high-quality details, so that the new buildings will be harmoniously incorporated into the existing surroundings and fit with the human scale that is characteristic of Riga.”

The first residential buildings to be constructed at Magdelēnas kvartāls have already received three of the highest prizes at Latvia’s biggest and most significant construction and sustainability awards – at The Most Sustainable Building and Project Awards 2017 in the category Most Sustainable Project in Latvia 2017 as the best commercial property; at The Latvian Construction Awards 2018 in the category New Residential Building 2018; as well as at The Best Building in Latvia Awards 2018 in the category New Residential Building.
