Vastint UK has scooped the ‘unbuilt’ Masterplans & Area Strategies New London Award for its first UK development, Sugar House Island located in east London.

The New London Awards, now in its ninth year and supported by the Mayor of London, are an annual celebration of London’s best architecture, construction and planning projects across the capital that respond to the needs of a global city. This category  champions placemaking and area-wide regeneration in the capital city.

The win acknowledges the significant work that Vastint UK, along with masterplanners ARC-ML (now Ten Four Architects) and the team of nine different architects and landscape firms have delivered to bring to life the vision of a truly mixed-use scheme.

Sugar House island is a 10 hectare brownfield site, bounded by water and with two conservation areas. The scheme will deliver 1,200 homes (40% of which will be three bed and above), over 80,000 Sq M of office space, a 350-bed hotel, alongside over 1.2 hectares of green space including a riverside park.

Monica von Schmalensee, a panel judge for the awards praised ‘the integration of new buildings with the old’ and the way it seeks to meet the needs of the local area of Newham and ‘encourages families to move into the area.’
